The story of recruiters who transitioned to IT

How often do we hear various success stories? Or stories of how someone worked in one field for many years and then changed their field of activity, successfully realizing themselves in a new place?

Today we want to share similar stories, specifically the stories of recruiters Vadim and Victoria, who worked in recruiting for quite a long time and then decided to change direction and transition to IT recruiting. This may motivate some, resonate with others, or simply be an interesting read about the lives of colleagues.

First, let's get to know Vadym, who, after 5 years in recruiting, decided to try himself in IT recruiting, took the "IT Recruiting from Scratch" course at EvoTalents.School, received an offer from EvoTalents immediately after completing the course, and started working as an IT recruiter. As Vadim said, "I am very happy that everything turned out this way, and now I'm in IT, not at my previous job."

Vadym, hello, please tell us, who did you work as before you got into IT recruiting?

Hello. I worked as an HR recruiter at a national logistics and distribution company.

What was the main reason for you to try yourself in IT recruiting?

First of all, it was the lack of development, the same routine work, and staying in the same job for almost 5 years (I don't understand now why I didn't want to change anything earlier!) with no prospects for career growth in the field of recruiting. It became tiresome to "spend" my "youth" (said the person who is 28 years old :) on a job that no longer brought satisfaction but was simply a means of survival.

Did you encounter any difficulties when transitioning from recruiting to IT recruiting?

Not really, because I had almost 5 years of experience in recruiting (oh yes, I will brag about it at every opportunity :). Of course, there were unfamiliar terms, jargon, and so on, but the transition went as smoothly as possible without catastrophic consequences for myself and others.

In three words, how would you describe "recruiting"?

Write, call, talk.

And "IT recruiting"?

Read, reach out, win!

What do you like most about IT recruiting, and why did you choose to develop yourself in this field?

New and, most importantly, interesting knowledge and challenges, which are absolutely the opposite of the work I did in recruiting before. Friends who work in IT constantly encouraged me to join them on their "dark side :)", plus the quarantine gave me the impetus to try moving in the direction of IT, and, of course, the enticing financial aspect, which is hard to ignore these days.

What advice would you give to yourself at the moment of transitioning to IT?

Don't be lazy, don't sit in one place, and read/consume more information!!! Don't be afraid to use new/unfamiliar features!

Thank you, Vadym, for the answers that truly motivate us to move forward. Next, Victoria shared her "transformation" story and also received an offer from EvoTalents after completing the "IT Recruiting from Scratch" course and joined the EvoTalents Team:

Hello. Share with our readers what you are doing now?

I am a recruiter in the IT field :)

Why did you decide to switch from recruiting to IT recruiting?

I had been working in recruiting for over 5 years. In 2020, there was a crisis due to COVID-19, and my company was not doing well, so I was looking for a change. If you are a recruiter not in IT, then in a small city like Ivano-Frankivsk, there are not many vacancies, and even fewer with a good salary. I was only interested in the progressive sphere. Remote work opened up countless opportunities for me, and the IT field became an inspiration :)))

Did you have a clear plan for transitioning to IT? What steps and stages did you outline for yourself?

Of course, I'm a strategist :) I had never been in the IT field as a recruiter. Thanks to YouTube, I listened to hundreds of videos about this "kitchen." I was inspired by Vika Prydatko and the People First Club, which introduced me to the "IT Recruiting from Scratch" course at EvoTalents. The steps were as follows:

Found a great online English teacher, I have classes twice a week, the goal is conversational level. Registered on LinkedIn and DOU (it's cool here :), tested all the tools used by recruiters, subscribed to YouTube channels. Found courses that lasted 1 month (optimal), with a reasonable price, cool speakers (and that's how it turned out), and practical tasks. Based on these criteria, EvoTalents turned out to be the best, and I still think so!

What are the main differences you can highlight between working as a recruiter and working as an IT recruiter?

In the IT field, it's much harder to impress a candidate :)

Did you face any difficulties when you started working in IT recruiting? What interesting or memorable moments do you remember from that period?

There is significantly less live communication here, and I missed it for some time. I was pleasantly surprised that remote cooperation with the team can be so productive and warm. After completing the courses, I immediately received an offer from EvoTalents, and I had the best mentors!

In your opinion, what should all recruiters pay attention to if they plan to transition to IT recruiting? What advice would you like to give them?

Recruiting in IT and non-IT are very different. I would advise talking to someone who already works in this field. Or take recruiting courses and find out everything that interests you!

Thank you, Vadym and Victoria, for your answers. We hope that you, dear readers, found them interesting and useful. Perhaps these answers will inspire you to make changes or help you dare to do what you've been dreaming of.
